Paying for care

Ask for the whole bill.

Ask for a written breakdown before agreeing. Put the charge for care beside the charge for medicine, then ask what will return each month.

A licensed health professional issues a prescription to order your medicine.

Words, unpacked

Self-pay puts the medicine payment outside your insurance.

For a covered bill, the amount you must contribute is your copay. A membership is a fee that repeats to keep a service going.

Advance approval means the health plan agrees to cover a prescription before it is filled.

A dated price for paying without insurance

This example is for someone paying without insurance. The medicine's price leaves other parts of the bill to discuss.

The government website TrumpRx advertised tirzepatide (Mounjaro) starting at $499 a month for people paying without insurance, as of September 26, 2026.

Use that as a drug-price example, not a price for peptide care as a whole. Ask for a fresh quote for the exact prescription and care plan.

  • Which medicine and form does the price cover?
  • How much supply does the quoted month include?
  • Does the amount change after an offer or a later refill?
  • Are care fees and tests separate?

A monthly care fee may leave medicine out

The research notes used for this guide recorded six services' advertised prices for online weight-loss care on September 26, 2026.

Five advertised monthly care fees, with medicine extra.

This small sample was not a survey of all services or of bills people paid.

A membership is a fee that repeats. Ask for the usual terms as well as any opening offer.

  • What is due for the first visit?
  • What repeats, and how can I stop those charges?
  • Are tests, delivery and later visits included?
  • What would I owe if no medicine is prescribed?

Ask your health plan about the reason for treatment

Tell your health plan the medicine's exact name and why the doctor proposes it. Ask whether it needs advance approval, meaning the plan must agree before it pays.

Within the usual Medicare drug benefit, medicines used for losing weight are excluded, as of September 26, 2026.

It can provide coverage for a medicine's other accepted medical uses, within the plan's rules, as of September 26, 2026.

  • Is this exact medicine covered for this use?
  • Is advance approval needed, and who sends the request?
  • What would I pay if the plan says no?

Medicare also has a separate temporary program

For eligible people, a separate Medicare program sets a $50 monthly copay (your share of the bill), as of September 26, 2026.

The program runs through December 31, 2027, under terms checked on September 26, 2026.

For covered medicines, the usual Medicare drug benefit puts a yearly limit on your payments.

The temporary program's $50 payments are extra; they do not help you reach that yearly limit.

Entry rules include age, weight and health conditions, and require a prescription and advance approval.

  • Check the full entry rules with the program before counting on that price.
  • Ask whether your prescription belongs under this program or the usual drug benefit.
  • Ask your plan what your yearly limit is and which payments count toward it.
  • Include the separate program payments when working out your total yearly medicine bill.
